Alternative R&B Genre Research

Music Magazine Survey Analysis

Alternative R&B Interview

As part of my audience and genre research, I decided to conduct a short interview with three candidates. This allowed me to get longer, more personal answers which could not be achieved with a mere survey. The answers I received were very useful in finding out about people's thoughts and feelings on the genre and also their ideas for an R&B magazine.

DEMOGRAPHIC MOOD BOARD

MOOD BOARD
This mood board portrays the demographic for Alternative R&B and some words/ images associated with it. For example, the majority of targeted consumers will be in the age range of 16-25 however it will be aimed at both male and female fans. I have highlighted fashion as one of the biggest selling points for teenagers/young adults who are fans of the genre, therefore I will make sure to put quite a bit of focus on using current fashion within my magazine. Social media is also very important among this demographic, this could be helpful in making the magazine interactive with its audience via sites like Twitter.

MUSIC MAGAZINE MOOD BOARD ~ ALTERNATIVE R&B

MOOD BOARD
In order to start thinking about some of the conventions within my chosen genre, Alternative R&B, I decided to create a mood board. From this I can see the diversity of popular artists at the moment e.g. Tinashe, Dean and Drake. I have been able to observe the kind of mise-en-scene related to the genre, for example sportswear seems to be very popular among many artists, with some singers actually being involved in creating products (e.g. Rihanna for Puma). This can help me when thinking about what the models within my images may wear. Some of the most common colours in the pictures appear to be red, black and white which could help me to plan what my colour scheme might be. Pink, Blue and Purple are also very frequent in music videos/concerts in Alternative R&B.
